Discovery of a 3.6-hr Eclipsing Luminous X-ray Binary in the Galaxy Ngc 4214

چکیده
We report the discovery of an eclipsing X-ray binary with a 3.62-hr period within 24 of the center of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214. The orbital period places interesting constraints on the nature of the binary, and allows for a few very different interpretations. The most likely possibility is that the source lies within NGC 4214 and has an X-ray luminosity, Lx, of up to 7 × 10 ergs s. In this case the binary may well be comprised of a naked He-burning donor star with a neutron-star accretor, though a stellar-mass black-hole accretor cannot be completely excluded. There is no obvious evidence for a strong stellar wind in the X-ray orbital light curve that would be expected from a massive He star; thus, the mass of the He star should be ∼< 3 − 4 M⊙. If correct, this would represent a new class of very luminous X-ray binary – perhaps related to Cyg X-3. Other less likely possibilities include a conventional low-mass X-ray binary that somehow manages to produce such a high X-ray luminosity and is apparently persistent over an interval of years; or a foreground AM Her binary of much lower luminosity that fortuitously lies in the direction of NGC 4214. Any model for this system must accommodate the lack of an optical counterpart down to a limiting magnitude of 22.6 in the visible. Luminous X-ray Flares from Low Mass X-ray Binary Candidates in the Early-type Galaxy Ngc
We report results of the first search specifically targeting short-timescale X-ray flares from low-mass X-ray binaries in an early-type galaxy. A new method for flare detection is presented. In NGC 4697, the nearest, optically luminous, X-ray faint elliptical galaxy, 3 out of 157 sources are found to display flares at > 99.95% probability, and all show more than one flare. Two sources are coinc...
متن کاملA Transient Black-hole Low-mass X-ray Binary Candidate in Centaurus A
We report the discovery of a bright transient X-ray source, CXOU J132518.2−430304, towards Centaurus A (Cen A) using six new Chandra X-Ray Observatory observations in 2007 March–May. Between 2003 and 2007, its flux has increased by a factor of > 770. The source is likely a low-mass X-ray binary in Cen A with unabsorbed 0.3–10 keV band luminosities of (2–3)× 1039 ergs−1 and a transition from the...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملDeep Chandra & Hubble Observations of Ngc 4697, the Nearest Optically Luminous, X-ray Faint Elliptical Galaxy
With NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, we have accumulated over two days of data from NGC 4697, the nearest optically luminous, X-ray faint elliptical galaxy. These observations provide one of the deepest views of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs; binary stars, with one normal star with M.MSun and either a neutron star or black hole, which emit profuse amounts of X-rays) in an elliptical galaxy. ...
متن کاملA variable ultra - luminous X - ray source in the colliding galaxy NGC 7714
We studied the colliding galaxy NGC 7714 with two XMM-Newton observations, six months apart. The galaxy contains two bright X-ray sources: we show that they have different physical nature. The off-nuclear source is an accreting compact object, one of the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) found to date. It showed spectral and luminosity changes between the two observations, from a low...
